Back in the early eighties, I lived in Summit County and was working in ski shops and skiing in the winter. I was always a "powder hound" when it came to skiing. Deep powder is like bouncing on the moon! So, I am quite certain that I met Mick skiing out of bounds on E chair at Breckenridge searching for deep powder. Mick "sold" Planetary Defense stickers to a select few.
The Planetary Defense, according to Mick, was started by a group of hard core back country and tree skiers who wore antenas on their heads back in Vail's early days. Their philosophy was inline with the Earth Liberation Front, though non-destructive. They were a group of eco warriors who demanded self-propulsion into our back country as watchdogs and guardians of the forest.

I met Mick while working at Breckenridge Ski shop and skiing most days. The Windows at Breckenridge were outside of the ski area and had a gate that said "Area Boundry, ski at own risk."
I quickly discovered the Windows' open glades, caused by avalanches and some steep narrow chutes in my quest for steep and deep powder. |
